Go Orange on September 13th and Fight Hunger in South Florida

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Did you know that in South Florida, more than 706,130 individuals don't know where their next meal will come from? More than 240,000 of those individuals are children and nearly 110,000 are older adults. As individuals, businesses, and government we all have a role to play in getting more food to those who need it, as well as breaking the cycle of hunger and poverty.

On Thursday, September 13th, Broward County will partner with Feeding South Florida in recognition of “Hunger Action Day” also known as “Go Orange Day” to bring awareness to hunger and food insecurity and engage in activities that will help to end the cycle of poverty and hunger in our region.

Broward County Commissioner Barbara Sharief will present a proclamation to Feeding South Florida executives designating September 13th as “Go Orange Day” in Broward County at the Commission meeting scheduled at 1PM at the Broward Governmental Center, 115 S. Andrews Ave., Room 422 in Fort Lauderdale.  Everyone in attendance is asked to wear orange and bring a can of food to donate.

“During the month of September, I encourage Broward residents, businesses and local governments to acknowledge the problem of hunger in our communities and then take action to help solve this growing problem.  Wearing orange on ‘Go Orange Day’ brings awareness to this cause, but action must follow in order for this effort to be successful over time,” said Commissioner Sharief.

Broward employees and residents are encouraged to wear orange and use social media throughout the day to bring awareness to hunger in our community.  Broward County will lead a food collection drive, throughout the months of September and October, with all donations being given to Feeding South Florida.

Feeding South Florida has many ideas and opportunities for individuals, companies and organizations to help the hungry by donating money or food, hosting fundraising events, volunteering or advocating. More information can be found at www.feedingsouthflorida.org
