County North Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant Wins Award

- Award is for Outstanding Wastewater Treatment Plant Performance -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - North Regional Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant was awarded the 2021 Earle B. Phelps Award in the secondary treatment category for “Outstanding Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Performance” by the Florida Water Environment Association (FWEA). The Plant also won the same award in 2016, 2017 and 2020.

FWEA presents the award annually to recognize wastewater treatment facilities that have maintained the highest removal of major pollution-causing constituents prior to discharging treated effluent to receiving waters. Awards are given in three wastewater treatment categories: advanced treatment, advanced secondary treatment and secondary treatment facilities.

“This pandemic has affected the way many people do business. It has pushed forward the concept of social distancing and operating virtually, if possible,” said Mark Darmanin, Director, Water and Wastewater Operations Division. “Due to the size of the equipment, working independently was out of the question, so teams were created and isolated from each other to ensure there would always be a team available to run and maintain the Plant. This award highlights the success of the dedicated employees who quickly adapted to a new normal and excelled during the adversity of a pandemic.”

The North Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, established in 1974, is a 95 million gallon per day plant that provides a regional wastewater treatment and disposal solution for Broward County’s retail water customers and large users. This includes several cities and North Springs Improvement District, Parkland Utilities and Royal Utilities.
