BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Florida will observe Severe Weather Awareness Week, January 23rd to 27th to stress to all residents that severe weather can happen at any time, such as severe storms, tornadoes and hurricanes. The Broward County Emergency Management Division reminds residents that hazardous weather can occur in Florida at any time, such as the January tornado in Coconut Creek/Pompano Beach and Hurricane Matthew that threatened Broward County in October last year. Everyone needs to be prepared year-round.
Broward County Emergency Management encourages residents to increase their knowledge of potential weather hazards. Each day of the week, educational messages will focus on a different type of severe weather hazard, including lightning, marine hazards and rip currents, tornadoes and thunderstorms, hurricanes and flooding, and temperature extremes and wildfires.
Miguel Ascarrunz, Director of Broward County Emergency Management Division, said, "Severe Weather Awareness Week is another opportunity to remind people of the need to be prepared for any eventuality that nature may bring. Last year's severe weather events affected many residents and businesses in Broward County. Preparing for severe weather gives us an opportunity to update our family as well as individual plans for emergencies. This is also a perfect time to review evacuation plans should the need arise, and create an emergency survival kit."
