BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – During the first six months of this year, Broward County and 14 contracted cities hosted nine household hazardous waste and electronics recycling drop-off events. Thousands of residents dropped off more than 200,000 pounds of waste. Nearly 125,000 pounds of it was household hazardous waste, and more than 83,000 pounds was electronic waste such as computers, monitors, televisions and rechargeable batteries. The top household hazardous waste items dropped off were approximately 81,000 pounds of leftover latex paint, 8,700 pounds of lead-acid batteries, 7,300 pounds of flammable liquids, 7,000 pounds of motor oil, and 5,000 pounds of corrosive liquids.

Collection events make it easy for residents to help the environment by providing them with safe, convenient drop-off locations. This helps prevent these substances from entering the waste stream. Electronics are recycled, while other materials are sent to federally permitted treatment and disposal facilities.

A new season of drop-off events will begin late in 2014; meanwhile, residents of participating cities may use any of the three Broward County Residential Drop-off Centers for disposal every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. These are located at:

• West Park, 5601 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd. (east of U.S. 441)

• Davie, 5490 Reese Road (off Davie Road)

• Pompano Beach, 2780 N. Powerline Road (north of Copans Road)

Residents of the following cities may use the drop-off stations above by showing proof of residency: Cooper City, Dania Beach, Deerfield Beach, Hollywood, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Lauderdale Lakes, Margate, Parkland, Pembroke Park, Sea Ranch Lakes, Unincorporated Broward, West Park, Weston and Wilton Manors. Proof of residency includes a photo ID with current address showing residency in one of the cities named above and one of the following: a utility bill, a vehicle registration, or a trim notice/tax bill. The addresses must match.
