BROWARD COUNTY, FL - On Sunday, September 11, 2016, the Broward County Aviation Department hosted a Dedication Ceremony of its September 11 Memorial. The Ceremony was held in Terminal 1 at Broward County's Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

Speakers included Broward County Mayor Marty Kiar, County Commissioner Chip LaMarca, CEO/Director of Aviation, Mark E. Gale, FLL/Key West Federal Security Director, Transportation Security Administration, Barbara Schukraft and Undersheriff, Broward Sheriff's Office, Stephen Kinsey.

Special guests included the Police Pipe and Drum Corps of Florida (Bagpipe Troupe), the Broward Sheriff's Office Honor Guard and the Transportation Security Administration Honor Guard. Tamisha Loftin-Lewis with the Broward Sheriff's Office performed the National Anthem and God Bless America.

As part of the permanent installation in Terminal 1, several 9/11 artifacts were secured by Laura Appleton, Master Security Training Instructor, TSA. The items included in the memorial are: a fragment of the World Trade Center's South Tower, a helmet of a New York Fire Department firefighter who took part in the World Trade Center recovery effort, and an American flag donated by Retired Lieutenant Colonel Michael F. Janzen, USAF. Following the attacks, he tucked the flag inside the cockpit of his F-15C before each mission to remind himself of his sacred duty to protect the borders of the U.S.
