FLL's Roadway Enhancements Designed With Public Safety in Mind

- Pedestrian crosswalk signalization work underway -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Work is underway on a million-dollar Pedestrian Crosswalk Signalization Project at Broward County’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

FLL is installing a new pedestrian crossing signal system to improve safety and traffic flow for guests using the lower-level roadway outside of Terminals 2, 3 and 4. The crosswalk improvements will include an audible pedestrian-activated signal system, enhanced overhead lighting, and new traffic signals. The project will also add new warning signs and pavement markings for motorists, ADA-accessible ramps on both sides of the curb, and impact bollards for pedestrian and terminal safety. Curbside passenger waiting areas will be more spacious.

The curb front enhancements will shorten the distance pedestrians will have to walk to cross the lower-level terminal roadway reducing their exposure to vehicular traffic.

The new system will serve to bolster FLL’s current pedestrian crossing protocol, which includes warning signs that alert motorists of approaching crosswalks, overhead flashing beacons at each crosswalk lane and red-colored pathways for greater visibility.

The Pedestrian Crosswalk Signalization Project is one of several enhancement initiatives taking place across the airport as part of more than $3.2 billion in terminal and airfield improvements.

Preliminary work on the multi-phase signalization project began in late 2018 for a targeted completion by the end of 2019.
