- Meeting to discuss ways to reach older adults -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - The County’s Complete Count Hard to Enumerate Subcommittee will focus its next meeting on discussing ways that Broward’s older adults can be reached to ensure they are counted in the 2020 Census. The meeting will take place on September 25th at Meals on Wheels South Florida, 451 N. State Road 7 in Plantation, starting at 3PM.

If you are a part of an organization or group that is involved in serving or supporting older adults in Broward County, join us on September 25th. Conducting the census is a massive undertaking and we need your help to ensure everyone is counted.

"This month's Committee meeting will provide professionals that serve older adults in Broward County with important information on why getting a complete count in the 2020 Census is vital to programs that serve this population. A panel of professional experts will begin the discussion on potential challenges as well as strategies for getting every older Browardian counted in the 2020 Census. The group will discuss how all agencies that serve and care for older adults can work together to help their clients overcome potential barriers to completing the 2020 Census," Said Mark Adler, MPH, Executive Director, Meals on Wheels South Florida and Co-Chair of the Hard to Enumerate Subcommittee.

The panelists for the meeting will include:

  • Mark Adler, MPH, Executive Director, Meals on Wheels South Florida
  • Charlotte Mather-Taylor, Executive Director, Aging and Disability Resource Center of Broward
  • Gail Weisberg, Executive Director, Daniel D. Cantor Senior Center
  • Diane Smith, Senior Director of SofiaCare, South Florida Institute on Aging

Census data is used to allocate more than $675 billion in federal funding to states and localities across the country, as well as determine the distribution of representation in Congress. This is extremely important for our democracy and community. Historically, older adults have been undercounted and this impacts the allocation of federal funding for the many programs designed to aid this segment of our population.

Every Broward County resident must be counted and should ensure their family members, are counted too. According to the 2018 study “The Silver Tsunami: Is Broward Ready?”, in the next 20 years Broward will be home to a record number of elderly residents. The study also noted that Broward has Florida’s fastest growing population of people over 85. Help us ensure they are all counted.
