Markham Park Continues Nature Programming

- Four fall events offer varied outings -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Discover that there’s more to Markham Park (16001 W State Rd. 84, Sunrise 33326; 954-357-8868) than its renowned target range and its popular campground, mountain bike trails, and dog park. On select Saturdays starting in mid-October, the park will emphasize nature programs of the sort it launched last year.

The October 12th event will be a Night Hike, from 6:30 to 7:30PM, with participants following a naturalist guide who will point out the beauty of the park after dark and share information on the nocturnal animals they may encounter along the way. The hike concludes at the Fox Observatory, where members of the South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association will lead explorations of the night sky using telescopes. The program will repeat at the same hours on November 2nd, then again on December 7th.

On November 9th, from 1 to 2PM, an Orienteering Class will be led by a naturalist who teaches participants how to use a compass to find their way. And on November 16th, from 10 to 11AM, there will be a Fishing Clinic, focusing on the fundamentals of fishing, which can then be put into practice. Fishing gear will be provided by the park for this catch-and-release event.

All programs are open to all ages and cost $5/person. The park’s regular weekend gate fee ($1.50/person, ages 5 and under free) will also be in effect. Preregistration is required by calling Markham at 954-357-8868. Closed-toe shoes, drinking water, and insect repellent are recommended, along with sunscreen for daytime programs.
