Residents and Visitors Advised to Take Precautions Due to Extreme Heat

- Heat indexes expected to reach 105 degrees or higher -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for all of South Florida including Broward County through Friday, June 16. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay hydrated and stay inside if possible.

Warnings like this arise when the heat index reaches 105 degrees or higher. The heat index is calculated by combining the actual temperature with relative humidity to tell people what the temperature "feels like." The heat index is forecasted to be above that over the next several days.

High indexes could lead to heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Some symptoms include profuse sweating, dizziness, vomiting and fainting. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest seeking shade, cooling off with wet towels, taking a cool bath and/or sipping (not gulping) water. If you experience any of the above symptoms for more than one hour, you are encouraged to seek medical attention.

The County's Resilient Environment Department has taken steps to help residents and visitors deal with the prolonged heat by mapping out the more vulnerable parts of the County. The Department has also launched a survey to determine people's preparedness when it comes to excessive heat.
