BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County Commissioner Lois Wexler has been named the 2016 "Advocate of the Year" by the United Way of Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse and the Broward Behavioral Health Coalition. The award honors the Commissioner's dedication and commitment to helping those living with substance abuse and mental health problems.

"I am thankful for this award, but it's the work that we do together as partners in the behavioral health and substance abuse arena that makes our community better," said Commissioner Wexler.

As an experienced and respected community leader, Commissioner Wexler has steadfastly championed programs and services to help the most vulnerable: the elderly, children and those suffering from mental health/substance abuse issues. Her expertise led to her current role as Chair of the Broward Behavioral Health Coalition, which was selected by the Florida Department of Children and Families as Broward County's managing entity for mental health and substance abuse services.

The award was presented at the 2016 Behavioral Health Conference held at the Signature Grand. The two-day event (May 10-11) attracted an estimated five-hundred people this year. Featured speakers included former American League Baseball right fielder Daryl Strawberry and motivational speaker and author Tonier 'Neen' Cain. The two-day conference included a number of workshops that addressed a wide array of issues pertinent to those working in the mental health and substance abuse field.
