Prescribed Burn Scheduled for Long Key

- Nature center's wetland to benefit from carefully conducted fire -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Weather conditions permitting, the Florida Forest Service, in conjunction with Broward County Parks and Recreation Division, will burn a parcel of land within Long Key Natural Area & Nature Center (3501 SW 130th Ave., Davie 33330; 954-357-8797) on Monday, May 20th. The burn will start in the morning and is projected to be completed by afternoon.

The fire is part of the Division’s responsibility to manage natural areas to maintain their ecological integrity and function. It is conducted by the professionally trained firefighters of the Forest Service, working closely with Broward County Parks.

Prescribed fires are a resource management tool used to reduce the shrub layer and encourage herbaceous growth. Such carefully planned and controlled fires also improve wildlife habitat, decrease the threat of wildfire, and diminish invasive non-native plants in the natural community. The burn will take place on 2.6 acres of ephemeral wetland directly north of the entrance to Long Key, west of Flamingo Road and north of Griffin Road.

While we will make every effort to minimize the smoke from this activity, we encourage residents with preexisting respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, the elderly, and small children to remain indoors or leave the immediate vicinity for the duration of the burn.

Specific weather requirements for a prescribed burn include easterly winds and dry conditions. If such conditions are not met on the day scheduled for the burn, the fire will be attempted on one of the two following days, May 21st or May 22nd.
