Hurricane Dorian Update #2

County Continues to Monitor Hurricane Dorian

- Residents urged to stay vigilant -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward Emergency Management Division is actively monitoring Hurricane Dorian. While it's still too soon to tell what type of impact Hurricane Dorian will have on Broward County, there is a need to prepare for every eventuality.

According to the National Weather Service, Dorian continues to increase in size and intensity, and is expected to become a major hurricane on Friday, and remain an extremely dangerous hurricane throughout the weekend. Broward County has a 75-90 percent probability of experiencing tropical storm force winds Saturday night into Sunday morning. Visit the National Hurricane Center website for the most up-to-date forecast information.

  • The Emergency Operations Center will activate to Level 2 from 9AM to 7PM Friday, August 30.
  • At a news conference on Thursday afternoon, Mayor Mark Bogen urged residents to be prepared now by stocking up on necessary hurricane supplies like non-perishable foods, water, gasoline, propane, medications and everything else you need to provide for your family for a minimum of three days. "Broward County residents appear to be heeding reminders to prepare early. Be patient if you face long lines at grocery stores or at gas stations as there's still a little time to prepare," Mayor Bogen said.
  • Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie announced at the news conference that all schools will be open Friday, and all after school activities will continue Thursday and Friday. Schools will be closed, however, Saturday through Monday (Labor Day).
  • The Broward County Call Center handled approximately 150 calls above average volume on Thursday. Most of the calls were related to special needs residents. The Call Center (311 or 954-831-4000) will be open from 9AM to 7PM on Friday.
  • Since Broward is expecting tropical storm force winds or stronger, everyone who needs to put up shutters, should finalize their plans and timing for doing so.
  • Power outages should be expected. Don't wait until the last minute to stock up on necessary supplies including medication.
  • No shelter openings have been announced, but if announced, location information will be posted on Broward.org/Hurricane. Not all of the shelter locations listed will be opened. Shelters that are pet-friendly will be indicated as such. View Shelter Locations
  • The U.S. Coast Guard is considering the timing of port closures based on the projected path and arrival of the storm, but no decisions have been made. Port and Airport passengers are encouraged to contact their airline or cruise line for current information on flight and cruise departures and arrivals.
  • Residents are encouraged to sign up for Alert Broward to receive official emergency notifications, and to follow Broward County on social media, including Twitter.com/ReadyBroward, Twitter.com/BrowardCounty or Facebook.com/BrowardEMD.

Everything you need to know to be prepared for a hurricane can be found on Broward.org/Hurricane. You'll find shopping lists, shelter listings, evacuation maps and much more. You can also call Broward County’s Emergency Hotline at 311, or 954-831-4000.

Since it is a holiday weekend, it's important that everyone stay vigilant, follows news reports, and watch for notifications from Broward County as Hurricane Dorian gets closer to South Florida.

The next Broward County news conference is at 11AM on Friday, August 30th.
