Monthly Program Covers Nature Centers Many Habitats

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Ten plant communities have been identified within Fern Forest Nature Center, Coconut Creek. Explore some of them when the roughly 247-acre nature preserve continues its latest season of the Saturday Stroll & Learn program, which takes place once a month, on the third Saturday, from October through March.

Participants in this series of naturalist-led walks will observe and discuss the habitats they encounter and the plants that inhabit them. The walks, which start at 10AM, are free. The current season got under way in October with a program on "Wetlands." The next program, on December 11th, will focus on "Ferns," the nature center's signature plant.

January 15th - "Prairie" - Visit the park's dry prairie and learn about its distinctive species, as well as hear how prescribed burns help maintain it.

February 12th - "Invasive Exotic Species" - Non-native plants are an ongoing threat. Find out which invasives are the most common.

March 12th - "Ethnobotany" - There are often surprising uses to plants found in the nature center. Get the scoop of some of these versatile natives.
