Black History Month Celebrated in Broward County

BROWARD COUNTY, FL- Broward County Mayor Mark Bogen and Vice Mayor Dale V.C. Holness will join the Broward Bar Association in celebration of Black History Month with featured speakers Congressman Alcee Hastings and retired Florida Supreme Court Justice James Perry.

 

The 17th Judicial Circuit Black History Celebration takes place Friday, February 22nd from 11AM-1PM at the Broward County Courthouse (East Wing) Jury Assembly Room 3320, 201 SE 6th Street in Fort Lauderdale. 

 

Discussion will focus on “A celebration of Black History—the Civil Rights Movement and the Criminal Justice System in Florida—the Struggle Continues.”  Broward County Administrator Bertha Henry will act as moderator. 

 

17th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Michael A. Robinson will open the program which includes a recognition of Broward County’s Black Judges.  Circuit Court Judges Fabienne E. Fahnestock and Elijah Williams will introduce the featured speakers.  Chief Judge Jack Tuter and Trial Court Administrator Kathleen Pugh will join the Mayor and Vice Mayor in welcoming the Broward County Bar Association members. 

 

In November of last year, the Broward County Commission unanimously approved Vice Mayor Holness’ request to name the north wing of the Seventeenth Judicial Court of Florida after the late Thomas J. (TJ) Reddick, Jr., prominent attorney, and namesake of the TJ Reddick Bar Association, established in 1982.  At the request of Mayor Bogen, Commissioners named the west wing of the Broward County Courthouse the Skip Campbell Building, in honor of the former Florida State Senator and Coral Springs Mayor.
