Andrews Avenue Drawbridge 30-Day Closure Delayed

- Now set for September 9th -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – The full 30-day closure of the Andrews Avenue Drawbridge in downtown Fort Lauderdale to vehicular and pedestrian traffic has been delayed due to unforeseen circumstances, however one lane north and southbound will remain closed.

The new dates for the complete closure are now September 9 - October 8, 2019, barring any unforeseen circumstances or weather conditions. At that time, vehicular and pedestrian traffic will be detoured to the SE 3rd Avenue Drawbridge.

Originally scheduled to be closed July 8 - August 6, 2019, the dates had to be pushed back to provide time for the contractor to have the equipment necessary to replace the original machinery without taking longer than 30 days.

Presently, one lane in each direction (northbound and southbound) between Las Olas Boulevard and South 5th Street remains closed. One lane has been modified to accommodate pedestrians walking over the bridge.

The closures are necessary because other than regular maintenance-related repairs, the 38-year-old bridge hasn’t received any major upgrades or refurbishments and the original machinery is nearing the end of its useful life.

The estimated construction cost for the Andrews Avenue Drawbridge Rehabilitation Project is $8.8 million which is being funded by Broward County utilizing the Constitutional Gas Tax. The City of Fort Lauderdale is contributing approximately 1 percent of the cost for requested enhancements.

Broward County apologizes for any inconvenience these necessary repairs may cause.
