Virtual Programs Teach Literal Skills

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – The Special Populations Section of Broward County Parks, serving those with developmental and physical disabilities, continues its busy schedule of virtual programs this month, building on its success with such programming last year and last month. The COVID-19 pandemic inspired this innovative group to rethink and rebuild activities to keep its target audiences connected while they stay safely at home.

  • 3R’s (Recycle – Repurpose – Reuse) Arts & Crafts – Thursdays, March 11th-April 22nd, 3:30-4:15PM – For adults 18 and up with developmental disabilities. Participants will learn basic skills to use in creating art projects by recycling, repurposing, and/or reusing materials. Zoom Meeting ID 923 1729 0933
  • Musical Expressions – Mondays, March 29th-May 17th, 5-5:45PM – For ages 13 to 30 with developmental disabilities. Participants will learn rhythmic patterns with percussion instruments to gain confidence, use peer cooperation, and have fun. Zoom meeting ID provided to registered participants only.
  • Cross-Round Fitness – Tuesdays, March 30th-May 18th, 4:15-5PM. For ages 18 and up with physical disabilities. A partnership with the Supportabilities Foundation that teaches self-defense through non-contact boxing and promotes physical fitness through adaptive exercises, from warmup to cooldown. Zoom meeting ID provided to registered participants only.
  • Take the Stage! – Saturdays, April 10th-May 29th, 9:30-10:15AM – For ages 7 to 15 with developmental disabilities. From hip-hop to jazz to breakdancing, these sessions will teach dance skills based in diverse forms of contemporary dance and physical fitness, assisted by experienced student volunteers from St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Classes include warmup, dance techniques and steps, working with props, rhythm and coordination activities, and cooldown. Zoom meeting ID provided to registered participants only.

All programs are free, but class size is limited, so preregistration is required by calling Special Populations at 954-357-8160/8170 or emailing SpecialPopulations@Broward.org. Consistent attendance is required, as each week participants will start new projects or build on techniques they learned the previous week.
