Prescribed Burn Scheduled for Military Trail Natural Area

- Site's scrubby flatwoods to benefit from carefully conducted fire -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Weather conditions permitting, the Florida Forest Service, in conjunction with Broward County Parks and Recreation Division, will burn multiple parcels of land within Military Trail Natural Area (4600 NW Ninth Ave./N Military Trail, Deerfield Beach 33064), between now and August 2021. The next prescribed fire, tentatively scheduled for Friday, June 25th, will be five acres in the southwest corner of the site. The area affected is located just east of Military Trail, south of NW 48th St. west of I-95.

Specific weather requirements for a prescribed burn include easterly winds and dry conditions. If such conditions are not met on the day scheduled for the burn, the fire will be postponed to the next date with the appropriate weather.

The fire is part of the Division’s responsibility to manage natural areas to maintain their ecological integrity and function. It is conducted by the professionally trained firefighters of the Forest Service, working closely with Broward County Parks.

In addition to increasing biodiversity and improving wildlife habitat, prescribed fires are a resource management tool that is essential to maintaining this scrubby flatwoods vegetation community. By reducing the thick undergrowth, the burn will decrease the threat of a catastrophic wildfire.

Residents in neighborhoods adjacent to the natural area have been contacted to ensure they are fully aware of the burn. While we will make every effort to minimize the smoke from this activity, we encourage residents with preexisting respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, the elderly, and small children to remain indoors or leave the immediate vicinity for the duration of the burn.
