County Celebrates Completion of 10-Mile Water Reuse Pipeline System

BROWARD COUNTY, FLBroward County held a ribbon cutting ceremony today to celebrate the completion of a 10-mile underground water reuse pipeline system that runs from the Broward County North Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant through Quiet Waters Park along the Hillsboro Canal to the County's northwest region.

The pipeline is a huge milestone for Broward County and further advances our commitment to the environment and resiliency. It allows Broward County Water & Wastewater Services (WWS) to turn 60 percent of its treated wastewater - previously discharged into the ocean - into water reuse for irrigation, providing an alternative water supply. Water reuse is wastewater that is highly treated, clear, and odorless. Up to 16 million gallons of water per day will be transported through the pipeline when regional partners, including Palm Beach County, complete their systems in a few years. To put that in perspective, just one million gallons of water would fill a 100-yard-long football field, 50 yards wide and 10 feet deep.

The project, which started in 2019 and cost $28 million, will save nearly $350 million and allows the County to meet its state of Florida Ocean Outfall obligations. A $3 million grant from the South Florida Water Management District and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection helped complete the project.

WWS will be one of the largest producers of treated wastewater in Florida, which in turn leads the nation in production. When reuse water is used for irrigation, it eases the demand on traditional, more limited, sources of water.
