BROWARD COUNTY, FL - The Youth Environmental Alliance (YEA) will join with Broward County Parks to present the Upland Systems Module in the University of Florida IFAS-Florida Master Naturalist Program. The 40-hour class meets two evenings per week, with three weekend field trips. The classes start on Monday, November 7th and run through Tuesday, December 6th.

In-person sessions will take place in the Oak Ridge Hall at Tree Tops Park (3900 SW 100th Ave., Davie 33328; 954-357-5130); the Fountain Room at Plantation Heritage Park (1100 S Fig Tree Lane, Plantation 33317; 954-357-5135); and Sawgrass Nature Center (3000 Sportsplex Dr., Coral Springs 33065; 954-752-9453). Field-trip locations include Long Key Natural Area & Nature Center in Davie, as well as several Broward County natural area sites: Crystal Lake Sand Pine Scrub and Highlands Scrub in Pompano Beach; Military Trail Natural Area in Deerfield Beach; and Helene Klein Pineland Preserve and Kristin Jacobs Natural Area at Hillsboro Pineland in Coconut Creek.

This is the first of three core modules required to receive certification as a Florida Master Naturalist, a designation recognized in school districts and governmental agencies statewide. Participants must be at least 18 years old. The instructors are Kristen Hoss, YEA's executive director, and Dr. John Pipoly of Broward County Parks, both of whom have several decades of teaching experience. The team will host an innovative hybrid of virtual and in-person, hands-on exercises as well as field training. Students will work in groups to produce interpretive projects.

The fee is $245 per student or $295 if a hard-copy manual is included (not recommended). Registration is online only and closes on Friday, November 4th. For additional information, contact Hoss at Kristen@YEAfrog.org or 248-933-1069, or Pipoly at ParksEnvEd@Broward.org or 954-357-5280.
