BROWARD COUNTY, FL - The Smart Growth Excellence Award has once again been given to Broward County by the Smart Growth Partnership.  This is the second year in a row that the county has earned the award, this time in the smart growth and green building category.

The award, presented to Mayor Tim Ryan on behalf of the Commission, recognizes the County's leadership in advancing a multimodal transportation system as well as environmentally sustainable programs.

"These awards recognize public and private entities that seek to successfully use the principles of smart growth in a way that protects the public health and the environment.  The important thing about these awards is that they are innovative and forward thinking and they can be easily replicated by other public entities.  Congratulations and we hope that you enjoy lots of smart growth in the future," said Bob Daniels, representative from the Smart Growth Partnership.

Broward County's accomplishments include the county's Climate Change Action Plan adopted in 2010, elements of which were incorporated into the County's Comprehensive Plan three years later.  Also noted was the adoption of the Complete Streets program which included transportation policies and public safety goals. Complete Streets are those that utilize design standards to make streets safe for all users, including those who walk, ride bikes and use public transportation.

The award also recognizes a multi-agency implementation strategy that is now leading to the successful expansion of electric vehicle charging stations.
