New Mayor and Vice Mayor Chosen in Broward County

2018 State of the County is "Solid, Strong, Caring, Compassionate"

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Broward County officially has a new Mayor and Vice Mayor.  Commissioners elected Commissioner Mark Bogen (District 2) to serve as Mayor and Commissioner Dale V.C. Holness (District 9) to serve as Vice Mayor.  Each will serve through November 2019.

Mayor Bogen said the theme this year is “Broward Getting Things Done.”  He outlined his “Triple A” plan for the year ahead.

Accountability: This year a status report will appear on each agenda outlining the progress on key projects.

Achievement: Each Commissioner will identify key projects in their individual district with goals to achieve throughout the year.

Awards: Broward’s six-thousand employees will be encouraged to bring forward ideas to save money and make government more efficient.

Commissioner Beam Furr, who served as Mayor this past year delivered the 2018 State of the County Address saying the County is “solid and strong, caring and compassionate, and well positioned for the future.”

Numerous accomplishments were made throughout the year following his theme Broward Teams Up.  “We passed the largest transportation plan in the United States this year. That’s a big deal,” said Furr, referring to the Penny for Transportation passed overwhelmingly by Broward voters.

“According to the Broward Scorecard, we’re doing great in every metric. Unemployment is the lowest in recent history.  We have reduced the number of people earning below the poverty line. All good stuff,” said Furr.

Environmental achievements in 2018 include the Southeast Florida Coral Reef Ecosystem Conservation Area.  “We teamed up with our seven neighboring counties…literally a landmark deal, that paves the way to saving reefs just off shore,” Furr said.

Vice Mayor Dale V.C. Holness has served a County Commissioner since 2010.  He noted the critical needs in his Central Broward County district.  “There are critical areas in terms of employment, poverty, the home ownership rate, crime rate and so much more. So, I am delighted to be able to help.  Small businesses are the backbone of our economic growth.  We must continue to give them the support they need. We must look and realize that we are in a competitive world.  We are in a global economy we must complete in this global economy,” said Holness, who founded and began the annual Florida International Trade and Cultural Expo.

New Commissioner Lamar P. Fisher was officially sworn in to serve the residents of District 4.  Swearing in ceremonies were also held for incumbent Commissioners Beam Furr, Mark Bogen and Dr. Barbara Sharief (District 8).
