County Considering Item to Boycott Companies Doing Business in Russia

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - The 17th largest county in the United States, Broward County, Florida, will be considering a resolution at its next meeting on April 5, 2022, to boycott companies, such as Nestle, and other businesses that are doing business in Russia. Broward County Commissioner Mark Bogen has sponsored the item and is leading the charge to encourage its 2 million residents and visitors to boycott companies that continue to do business in Russia. Furthermore, Bogen will ask the State of Florida to consider divesting any holdings the state may have in such companies that are doing business in Russia. "While we applaud those businesses that have ceased their operations in Russia, we need to urge the public to boycott those businesses that continue to provide services and products in Russia" said Bogen.

Commissioner Bogen will ask the board to pass a resolution which asks for a boycott of all companies doing business with Russia starting with Nestle, S.A. who continues to do business. The resolution states that "a principled stand by the international business community against the action of the Russian government requires withholding from Russia all of the privileges and benefits of participation in the international economy- from chocolate to Cheerios and from bottled water to baby food."

The Commission resolution proposed by Commissioner Bogen also applauds those businesses that have withdrawn from Russia as the Russia invasion against Ukraine continues. It notes that many major American and international businesses have closed their operations in Russia to protest the invasion of Ukraine.

Commissioner Bogen will also ask other cities and counties to join Broward County's boycott of those companies and products that do business in Russia.

Commissioners will discuss this matter at the next regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, beginning at 10 a.m. in Room 422 of the Government Center, 115 S. Andrews Avenue in Ft. Lauderdale.
