HURRICANE MATTHEW ADVISORY NUMBER 2

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - When making your hurricane preparations, don't forget children, the elderly, and pets.

Elderly residents are especially at risk in an emergency and should take extra steps to ensure their safety and well-being before a storm. This may require the assistance of a family member or caregiver. Visit this website for more information.

Don't forget about your animals when preparing for a storm. Your preparedness activities should include ensuring that your dog or cat has proper identification, assembling a pet survival kit, and creating a shelter plan. You'll find a checklist of what you should be doing here

Residents who own horses or other large animals are encouraged to make preparations as well. Specific instructions can be found on this website. Details available include:

  • proper identification for horses and other large animals
  • preparation for barns, stables and pastures
  • correct ways to restrain horses and  other large animals
  • planning for at least a five-day supply of food, water, hay and medical supplies

You can register your large animals on Broward County's Online Animal Registry, and include detailed information on physical traits that can help others, including veterinarians and other medical or emergency responders, identify your animals if they become lost.

Broward County officials are carefully monitoring Hurricane Matthew and will hold another news conference at 6PM to provide an update for residents. The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is operating at a Level 2, which means emergency response personnel are beginning to staff the EOC in response to Hurricane Matthew and are taking necessary protective actions.
