BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County Commissioners officially cut the ribbon in preparation for the Grand Opening of the new Animal Care and Adoption Center in Fort Lauderdale.
The 40,000 square foot, fully air conditioned facility is state of the art and LEED certified. The $16.5 million Center, located at 2400 SW 42nd Street in Fort Lauderdale, is nearly double the size of the current facility and has the capacity to care for approximately five hundred dogs and cats. It opens to the public on November 15th at 11 AM.
"The new Animal Care and Adoption Center exemplifies Broward County's commitment to our shelter animals and the best possible service for our residents," said Mayor Marty Kiar. "The warm and welcoming atmosphere that this building provides will encourage people to adopt an animal. Every effort has been made to insure the best in animal care and comfort," said Broward Mayor Marty Kiar.
The unique design incorporates natural light with a modern floor plan that creates spacious and bright customer service and animal care areas. Customers will enjoy special meet and greet rooms for families considering adoption, an outdoor interaction area and a conference/meeting room for outreach services and training programs.
"The architect, LIVS Associates, and contractor Stiles Construction, paid great attention to every detail. Everything you see in this building is here in order to accommodate our animals and the public," said Commissioner Lois Wexler.
The new facility features the latest in modern sheltering including an expanded surgical suite, centralized cleaning and disinfection system, specialized treatment rooms for advanced disease management and a stand-by generator in the event of a power outage.
"The Broward County Commission has been successful in finding ways to care for our animal population that are humane, compassionate and self-sustaining. Last year more than 6,000 animals were adopted and the unprecedented growth in the sales of licenses has resulted in revenue of nearly $1 million that will be used for future sterilization programs," noted Commissioner Chip LaMarca. "This new building will allow us to build on this success."
"This building is beautifully designed and will encourage people to adopt an animal. My own pets would be happy here," said Commissioner Beam Furr.
To help prepare for the transition of dogs and cats to the new location, a special "Moving Sale" adoption promotion will take place beginning Saturday, October 22 at the current facility located at 1870 SW 39th Street in Fort Lauderdale. All adoption fees on dogs and cats will be waived.
