WHAT: BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – The Broward County Board of County Commissioners and the Parks and Recreation Division invite the public to an Intracoastal Dock Opening, starting at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 22, at Deerfield Island Park in Deerfield Beach. The ceremony will be held at the City of Deerfield Beach’s Sullivan Park, located at Riverview Road and the Intracoastal Waterway. Light refreshments will be served after the ceremony, and boat shuttle tours will be available for those who are interested in a closer look at the new dock.

Boating has been associated with the park since it opened in 1980. As Broward County’s only true island park, it is accessible only by boat, bordered by the Intracoastal and the Hillsboro and Royal Palm canals. The park has an existing marina with six slips for boats no longer than 25 feet, a feature that dates back to the park’s early days.

It is fitting, then, that the park now gets its own Intracoastal dock, which will be accessible to leisure boaters on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; docking is not permitted during the week, and overnight mooring is not allowed. The 170-foot-long dock can accommodate up to six boats at a time, depending on their length; dockage is available on a first-come, first-served basis. A 520-foot-long recycled-plastic walkway connects the dock to the marina and the park’s trail-access area.

Other amenities at this 53.3-acre park include freestanding picnic tables and grills; a small playground; and one small rental picnic shelter (capacity 40), with tables, grills, water, electricity, an area for volleyball, and a horseshoe pit. The half-mile Coquina Trail includes an observation platform overlooking the Intracoastal. The park regularly offers bird walks, volunteer workdays, kayak tours, and night hikes, and programs are available by prearrangement for school groups.
