BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. - Veterinarians in Broward County will be required to make rabies vaccination tags available in their offices, if a proposed ordinance is passed by Broward Commissioners.

The Commission instructed the County Attorney to draft an ordinance that would make the availability of in-office rabies tags mandatory.  The goal is to increase the number of registered pets in Broward County.

The new ordinance was proposed by Commissioner Chip LaMarca.

“These tags allow quick access to owner information and verification of rabies vaccination which is critical for any person who has been involved in a bite incident with an animal,” said LaMarca.

The ordinance is also expected to decrease the number of animals taken to pet shelters and reduce associated costs of care and kenneling while in custody, by facilitating prompt animal “return-to-owner” in the field.

Additionally, all fees collected for animal rabies registration tags over 100,000 annually will be allocated for spay and neuter programs intended to reduce the intake of unwanted animals.

The ordinance will come before the Commission at a later date for further discussion.
