BROWARD COUNTY, FL - The Broward County Homeless Initiative Partnership/Continuum of Care Lead Agency has been awarded an additional $1.25 million by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) through the 2013 HUD Continuum of Care (CoC) Program, for a total of more than $10.2 million, the largest award to date in Broward County.

The CoC program provides funding for supportive services, transitional housing, rapid re-housing and permanent supportive housing. The grant funding is part of more than $140 million in additional grants that HUD recently allocated nationwide to help local communities continue to address homelessness. Most importantly, these new funds will create 55 new permanent supportive housing beds for chronically homeless persons and 25 new rapid re-housing beds for families through “A Way Home” Plan to End Homelessness initiatives being conducted in partnership with Broward Partnership for the Homeless, Inc., Broward Housing Solutions, Hope South Florida, Inc. and the United Way.

The additional award also continues funding for Homeless CoC planning activities in support of the goals established in Broward County’s "A Way Home" Plan to End Homelessness. The “A Way Home” Plan was approved by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners in August 2013. Today, the County continues to actively seek and secure resources to address this growing need.

The additional awards will fund a total of 22 HUD CoC Program projects totaling over $10.2 million dollars that focus on housing and/or services in support of 1,262 beds in Broward County for eligible homeless clients.

The 21 CoC Program housing and supportive services projects funded via the 2013 HUD CoC Program awards will serve homeless adult and youth clients, including:

• individuals, families, veterans;

• those with mental, emotional and physical disabilities;

• substance abuse disorders;

• mothers with children including pregnant women; and

• those who are “chronically” homeless and those who have co-occurring disorders.
