BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Public libraries in the United States have always served a wide variety of functions, from simply offering free books and DVDs to check out to presenting educational and entertaining workshops and events. Additionally, public libraries step up when their communities are in need. Library Journal reports that the Ferguson Library in Ferguson, Missouri provided “ad hoc school on the fly" when public schools were closed due to the demonstrations in response to the shooting death of Michael Brown.

Closer to home, when Hurricane Wilma left numerous Broward County citizens without power for weeks, Broward County Library staff were mobilized to provide phone support and to deliver meals and water where needed. After the devastation of the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the Pompano Beach Library provided free telephone and internet access to customers could get in touch with their friends and family.

On an annual basis, Broward County Libraries provide free income tax preparation and sites for early voting. Our librarians assist customers every day with essential online E-government tasks such as applying for food stamps or Medicaid, getting information on the Affordable Care Act or applying for a job. Libraries act as a safety net for the community, providing vital services when they are needed the most.

Public libraries are truly community centers for education, entertainment, cultural and civic resources. Broward County Libraries is pleased to continue in this vein, with several upcoming events that address specific needs and issues in our diverse community.
