BROWARD COUNTY, FL – The upcoming September Business Development Series workshop themed “Labor Laws and Tax Advice for Your Business” presented by the Broward County Office of Economic and Small Business Development (OESBD) will offer information on labor law and business tax, and inform business owners and entrepreneurs about the new Broward County Workforce Investment Program, which becomes effective on October 1, 2014. The workshop will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2014 from 10:30 a.m. to Noon at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, located at 2650 Sistrunk Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale.

In accordance with the Broward County Workforce Investment Act, companies with County contracts of $500,000 or more will be required to employ the “hard to hire” and economically disadvantaged to encourage investment in Broward County economic development. The purpose of the ordinance is to increase potential employment opportunities in connection with County-funded contracts. Brenda Billingsley, Director, Broward County Purchasing Division and René D. Harrod, Assistant County Attorney, will discuss how the new program will impact the County procurement process.

The workshop will commence with welcome remarks from Commissioner Dale V.C. Holness, District 9. Other featured speakers include Gregory Jackson, Purchasing Agent, Broward County Purchasing Division, Shaun M. Davis, CPA, Managing Partner, S. Davis & Associates, P.A., and Morgan L. Weinstein, Associate, Van Ness Law Firm. Participants will learn:
• Broward County Workforce Investment Program goals
• Requirements for contractors and subcontractors
• Which County contracts will be subject to the new program
• How the program process will work
• Insights into applicable employment regulations for small businesses
• Information to attain compliance with Internal Revenue Service regulations
