BROWARD COUNTY, FL – On Monday, December 1, 2014 from 5 to 8PM Commissioner Holness will provide welcome remarks for the World AIDS Day Community Event titled “It Takes a Village to Stop HIV: World AIDS Day Community Cookout” at Dillard High School, located at 2501 NW 11th Street, Fort Lauderdale.

This family friendly event is open to the public and will include guest speakers, youth performances, quilt displays, HIV testing and education, and free food. Every year, December 1st is commemorated as World AIDS Day, which began in 1988. People and communities around the world dedicate the day to activities and events to cherish the memories of those who battled the disease, and to celebrate progress achieved in the global response to HIV. It is also a time to commemorate the millions of lives affected by the AIDS epidemic, with a mission of “Getting to Zero” by 2015.

“It is very important that everyone in our community realizes AIDS affects us all because there are many within our community that are in need of care, information, and support. When we strengthen those who are in need, we strengthen the entire fabric of our community. Our brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters need our help to ensure we overcome this epidemic,” said Holness.

Commissioner Holness has served on the HIV Planning Council since February 2011. The Council establishes priorities for the allocation of funds within Broward County; develops a comprehensive plan for the organization and delivery of health care services; and assists Broward County in applying for grants pursuant to the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency Act.
