BROWARD COUNTY, FL -  Residents will have another safe area to walk, run, rollerblade and ride their bicycles and horses as another Greenway System project gets underway.

The Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division (HBMD) begins construction of the Hiatus Greenway, part of Broward County's Greenway Master Plan, on Monday, January 19th.

The Greenway System is a countywide network of safe and clean bicycle and equestrian paths, nature trails and waterways. It provides opportunities for recreation, restoration and enhancement of native vegetation and wildlife habitat, and alternative modes of transportation.

The Hiatus Greenway includes five miles of multipurpose sidewalk, 8 to 12 feet wide. It includes new landscaping, benches, trash receptacles, and signage in the cities of Plantation and Sunrise.

PROJECT LIMITS: West side of the C-42 Canal from SR-84 north to Oakland Park Boulevard

WHEN: Start Date: January 19, 2015
Completion Date: On or before January 2016

TRAFFIC: Minor impact is expected as most of the construction will be done within the South Florida Water Management District right-of-way.

CONTACT:  Project Manager Adriana Toro can be reached at 954-357-6064 or 954-826-9127 or by email

The Hiatus Greenway joins the New River and Crypress Greenways, which offer a unique opportunity to experience the very different ways of life within Broward County and are part of the County's ongoing commitment to make the area safer for pedestrians and bicyclists, decrease air pollution, and encourage people to get more exercise.
