BROWARD COUNTY, FL -
County officials are praising the decision by the Fort Lauderdale City Commission to approve a new headquarter building for the Broward Addiction Recovery Center (BARC). The move will allow for a larger and more modern facility to be built at the corner of SW 27th Street and 4th Avenue. Plans for a new building have been in the works by County planners for nearly ten years.

The new 50 bed facility will allow for scheduled treatment along with walk-in admittance. BARC, administered through the County's Human Services Department, offers a comprehensive range of services for Broward County residents affected by substance abuse and/or co-occurring disorders, but has been providing services in an old church for the past 40 years, with limited space, 34 beds, and old equipment. That's about to change.

BARC's services in the new state-of- the-art facility will be enhanced to 21st century medical and treatment models. Clients in Detoxification Services will experience hospital-type settings instead of the current "dorm style" setting.  Admissions, Non-Residential Day Treatment, Medical Records and Administration, will have the appropriate office and treatment space necessary to accommodate staff and clients. BARC Director Paul Faulk says, "The building design is to encourage a peaceful and safe environment to promote recovery. It's a well-known fact that a positive setting encourages positive outcomes, and that is Broward County's goal!".

Construction of the new 49 thousand square foot facility is expected to begin in early 2016 with an estimated cost of $19.6 million. Anticipated opening is between September 2017 and March 2018.

This news follows another positive accomplishment by the Center. Last month, BARC earned the Gold Seal of ApprovalĀ® for accreditation by complying with The Joint Commission's national standards for health care quality and safety in behavioral health care. The accreditation award recognizes BARC's dedication to continuous compliance with these standards.

BARC is currently located at 1011 SW 2nd Court in Fort Lauderdale and is open 7AM to 5PM Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 7AM to 7PM on Tuesdays. The facility assists 4,500 clients each year, and an additional 1,800 clients per year receive medically supervised drug and alcohol withdrawal treatment at BARC's detoxification unit.
