BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Saturday, March 7th was a great day for a makeover at the Broward Addiction Recovery Center, 1011 SW 2nd Court, Fort Lauderdale. Over 40 Florida Power and Light Company (FPL) volunteers arrived at the Broward County treatment center to beautify the outdoor areas surrounding the facility. FPL volunteers along with BARC staff overhauled an overgrown and dreary garden with new plantings, decorative landscaping, mulch and a new butterfly garden. The beautification project is part of FPL's "Power to Care" Program, now in its seventh year.

According to Manny Miranda, FPL Vice President of Power Delivery, "Our work here today at BARC culminates an entire week of volunteer work throughout the state. FPL has nearly 1,500 volunteers at more than 30 projects across our entire service area. It's our way to make sure that each and every day we are giving back to our community and doing important work."

BARC has been giving back to the community for over 40 years by treating individuals 24/7 for alcohol and drug abuse. Paul Faulk, Director of BARC said, "about 4,000 people pass through our doors annually and 3,400 receive treatment. If you consider that we have served this community for over 40 years, BARC is one of the largest providers in the state." BARC provides full medical, nursing, counseling and clinical staff. The comprehensive program includes detox, residential services (30 days), non-residential and outpatient services. Clients can potentially be in care for almost one year and gain an opportunity to turn their lives around.

Juliet Roulhac, Regional External Affairs Manager for FPL added, "At Florida Power and Light Company, we're committed to working together with the communities we serve to make Florida an even better place to raise a family and do business. It is a rewarding experience to pitch in and make upgrades in partnership with Broward Addiction Recovery Center, an organization that addresses such an important need and gives back to the community each and every day."

At the March 3rd Broward County Board meeting, Commissioners recognized FPL for their generous $7,200 donation for landscaping improvements and volunteer services. Mayor Ryan said "We are proud to be the beneficiaries of FPL's Power to Care Program and their dedication to giving back to the community they serve. While BARC's future is bright with plans to relocate to a new facility on the horizon, the work that FPL volunteers provide make a difference by creating a more inviting, attractive facility for clients and visitors. Many thanks to FPL for donating their time, landscaping materials and services to make this beautification effort a great success."

After many years of discussion, last week, the City of Fort Lauderdale City Commission approved a new headquarters building for the Broward Addiction Recovery Center (BARC). The move will allow for a larger and more modern facility to be built at the corner of NW 27th Street and 4th Avenue. Paul Faulk, said "This will allow BARC to step into the 21st century with modern medicine and technology to do what the rest of the world is doing. To succeed in treatment, people need to feel safe and that their environment is warm and welcoming." Construction of the new 49,000 square foot facility is expected to begin in early 2016 with an estimated cost of $16.9 million. Anticipated opening is between September 2017 and March 2018.
