BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Ground was broken today on a new $15.2 million contemporary animal shelter and adoption center at 2400 SW 42nd Street, Fort Lauderdale, 33312. The 40,000-square-foot modern shelter will be located on six acres in the Broward Municipal Services District, directly across from Broward's Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport long-term economy parking lot. The new building will replace the current Adoption Center located on SW 39th Street, Fort Lauderdale. Special canine "dig"nitaries were on hand to dig the first mounds of dirt.

"The new Animal Care and Adoption shelter is another example of the County Commission's commitment to supporting the adoption of pets in our community as well as providing programs and services for pets in need," said Broward County Mayor Tim Ryan. "With continued support from the community, the new facility will give us a great foundation to becoming a successful no-kill
county."

The new building almost doubles the size of the current shelter and will have the capacity to care for approximately 400 dogs and cats. Features include:

  • Unlike the current shelter, the entire building will be air-conditioned, including all kennel areas.
  • The kennel portion of the new facility will also feature an expanded clinic to service and care for shelter pets.
  • New shelter customers will enjoy special pet interaction (visiting) rooms for privacy.
  • Conference meeting space will be available for outreach programs and there will also be a retail store.
"As we strive to save lives, we can't do it alone," said Thomas Adair, Administrator, Animal Care and Adoption Division. "Today signals the commitment of our community to work together to improve the quality of animal care in Broward County. With this new shelter we will be offering an exciting and welcoming atmosphere that the community can be proud to call its own and help us make a difference in the lives of our pets in need."

The building is expected to be opened in mid-2016. Updates on the new facility can be found on the project
website
