BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County Aviation Department's new Maintenance Facility has earned the LEED® Silver Certification. The facility opened in February 2015. It is located at Broward County's Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
Achieving LEED® certification for the project was a collaborative effort by the architect, Walters Zackria Associates; the contractor, The Morganti Group, Inc.; and the Broward County Aviation Department.
The U.S. Green Building Council determined the project achieved 54 points resulting in a Silver Certification level under the New Construction Rating System. The LEED® building is projected to have a 23 percent reduction of electrical use, 35 percent reduction of water use over conventional buildings, and a reduction of operational cost by $30,000 per year.
The facility allows the Aviation Department to consolidate staff in a single facility. It includes rooftop parking. This results in a smaller site area for the project. Other benefits include:
• Recycled over 85 percent of demolition and construction waste.
• Used low flow water fixtures in bathrooms and break areas.
• Over 20 percent local/regional materials were utilized.
• Over 20 percent of materials contain recycled content.
• All wood doors and cabinets are formaldehyde free and Forest Stewardship Council certified.
• Finished interiors are low volatile organic compounds.
• Expansive windows allow daylight and reduce artificial lighting.
• Glazing includes insulated/laminated glass with high performance coating.
