BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Mayor Marty Kiar's initiative to celebrate good news happening in Broward County continues through 2016 as County Commissioners recognize people, businesses and organizations doing good things with positive outcomes for the whole community.

Commissioner Lois Wexler congratulated two people on Tuesday who came to the aid of travelers in Broward County.  Tracy Olivera from the Broward County Aviation Division was recognized for the work she did to help a passenger who had to be transported to the hospital after a passenger plane caught fire.  Nevoyel Belonce from Yellow Taxi was honored for helping a passenger after a family member suffered a heart attack while visiting Broward County.

A group of volunteers from the City of Hope Kings Point Chapter caught the attention of Broward Commissioner Stacy Ritter for the millions of dollars they have worked to raise to fund research for ongoing cancer treatments and other life threatening diseases.  On January 5
th, nearly twenty volunteers came to the Commission meeting to be recognized during the Broward Good News presentation.

On December 8
th, the Friends of Long Key, Inc. were recognized by Mayor Kiar for their dedication to helping protect the environmental and historical heritage of the Long Key Natural Area and Nature Center. Long Key is considered to be one of the most important sites to the history and ecology of South Florida and is a Broward County park.

At the December 1
st, commission meeting, Mayor Kiar kicked off the "Year of Good News" in Broward County by honoring and highlighting St. David Catholic School students who collected 1,620 items of food; gathered the food in bins to make 112 complete Thanksgiving Day baskets; and distributed the baskets to low income families.

"This year, as Mayor I determined that our county's theme will be the "Year of Good News". At each commission meeting, we bring good news to the public by highlighting the successes of our county, local businesses, residents who are good Samaritans and other positive happenings," said Mayor Kiar.

All residents are encouraged to share good news on social media with
#BrowardGoodNews and to email the county at BrowardGoodNews@broward.org so that we may share Broward's good news on the Commission's Twitter @Browardinfo and on the Commission's Facebook page.
