BROWARD COUNTY, FL -Broward County's North Regional Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant is the First Place Winner of the Florida Water Environment Association (FWEA) 2016 Earle B. Phelps Award for "Outstanding Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Performance," in the secondary treatment category.

The annual award was presented at the FWEA Conference held April 24-26, in Orlando, and recognizes wastewater  treatment facilities that have maintained the highest removal of pollutants. Awards are given in three wastewater treatment categories:  Advanced treatment, advanced secondary treatment and secondary treatment facilities.

"To be recognized as one of the best wastewater treatment facilities in the State of Florida is a huge honor," said Mark Darmanin, Water and Wastewater Operations Division Director. "The plant consistently produces quality treatment and we maintain an exemplary compliance record thanks to the dedication of our staff."

The facility reduces nutrients being discharged through the ocean outfall, increases preventative maintenance hours, operates a septage receiving facility, enforces an active industrial pretreatment program, manages an on-site National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference (NELAC)-certified laboratory and continues to forge ahead with construction projects such as a Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) receiving station and a highly efficient energy conserving cogeneration facility, as well as training programs to attract and retain talented staff.

The Plant was established in 1974, and is now a 95 million gallon per day facility that provides a regional wastewater treatment and disposal solution for Broward County's retail water customers and large users, including the Cities of Coconut Creek, Coral Springs, Deerfield Beach, Lauderhill, North Lauderdale, Oakland Park, Pompano Beach and Tamarac; North Springs Improvement District, Parkland Utilities, and North Springs Improvement District and Royal Utilities.
