BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County Water and Wastewater Services and the Palm Beach County Water Utilities Department have formed a partnership to construct a cooperative project that will utilize reclaimed water and conserve drinking water supplies in South Florida. The partnership highlights the commitment of both County governments to water conservation and coincides with the proclamation by both County Board of Commissioners to recognize "Water Reuse Week," May 15-21.
The partnership will be implemented through an interlocal agreement that has been approved by both County Boards, and both Utilities are now actively engaged in the initial design of the project within their respective service areas.
For Broward County, the partnership represents the most effective way to achieve the Florida 'Ocean Outfall Rule' that requires increased beneficial reuse water capacity and distribution. The project will provide up to 15 million gallons per day of new reuse water to Palm Beach County, to meet increasing demands throughout its reclaimed water service area. Through the utilization of alternative water supply for irrigation needs, drinking water supplies will be conserved for future use. This 'win-win' regional solution ultimately provides significant benefits to customers of both Counties and the water resources they rely on.
The project consists of three sections:
- Expansion of the existing Broward County North Regional Waste Water Treatment Plant's reuse capacity from 10 million to 26 million gallons per day. This will expand the existing filter and high level disinfection system in order to meet future reuse water demand
- Installation of approximately 5.8 miles of a 42-inch reuse transmission piping as the source pipe for the reclaimed expansion into Palm Beach County and also the North Springs Improvement District
- Expansion of the reclaimed system into the southern portions of Palm Beach County.
The project should be completed by 2020. Additional distribution components will continue to be enhanced in Palm Beach County beyond 2020.
