BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Animal Care and Adoption has received a grant of $30,000 from the Community Foundation of Broward to provide more than 100 Foster Kits for its Foster Care Program.  This Animal Welfare grant has been made possible by the following Community Foundation of Broward Funds: David W. Leonard Fund; Helen Victoria Foote Fund, and Bessie McDwyer Fund.

Animal Care is using the grant to provide a special Foster Kit to Foster Care Parents as part of its "Purr-fect Foster" initiative.  The kit includes everything necessary to care for kittens in need, including:
  • a supply of kitten food
  • feeding bowls
  • cat pan and liners, litter and a scoop.
  • a special carrying bag to hold all of the supplies
"We are very excited to receive this grant," said Krystal Mapp, foster care coordinator, Broward County Animal Care.  "In the past, residents would express interest in fostering, but were sometimes unable to afford to purchase the necessary supplies. Now, because of the grant from the Community Foundation of Broward County, we are able to provide them everything necessary to care for our foster kittens until they are ready for adoption."

"People foster for a variety of personal reasons and it is important to provide all we can." says Animal Care Director, Thomas Adair. "Foster parents play a critical role in our mission to save more animals."

On average, more than 1,300 kittens are fostered each year. Kittens stay in the Foster Program until they are at least two months old, or weigh two pounds.  At that time, they are placed into adoption.
