BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Customers will be able to ride free on two all-electric, zero-emission buses coming to Broward County Transit (BCT) later this month. The buses are eco-friendly and will be in Broward for one month as BCT tests their abilities, while allowing customers to ride for free.

Like all other Broward County Transit buses, these 40-foot electric demonstration buses will be equipped with wheelchair ramps, air conditioning and bicycle racks. They will be used intermittently on Routes 5, 10, 16, 34, 36, 40 83, 88 and 102 from the end of August to the end of September.

"Electric bus technology has advanced to the state where it has earned serious consideration in the transit industry," said Chris Walton, Broward County Transit Transportation Director. "These buses appear to have substantially lower operating costs while eliminating exhaust emissions. We will gather feedback from operators driving the buses, mechanics learning about the buses, and customers riding on the buses through the time they are here. BCT will then analyze the results and consider adding some to our current fleet."

The manufacturers of these two all-electric buses say their vehicles can travel 150 to 160 miles on a single charge, while seating up to 41 passengers. The battery takes about four hours to charge, while still being much quieter than regular buses.
