BROWARD COUNTY, FL - September is National Preparedness Month and Broward's Emergency Management Division is encouraging County residents to prepare and have a plan for any emergency event.

The annual national month-long observance is designed to increase awareness of the importance of emergency preparedness, and encourages all individuals and communities to be informed by turning awareness into action by having an emergency family plan and having an emergency supply kit.

"The recent sudden increase in tropical activity, serves as a reminder that all of us need to be prepared for any emergency no matter how short a response time we may have. Although September is the peak month for hurricane activity, residents should be ready for any emergency year round," said Miguel Ascarrunz, Director of Broward County's Emergency Management Division.

In addition, it's a great time for residents to get involved in their community by volunteering with local emergency preparedness activities, including
Florida's Citizen Corps, local Citizen Corps and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) programs. The American Red Cross is also looking for volunteers year round to assist residents and communities impacted by emergencies or disaster events.

The Emergency Management Division is hosting a SKYWARN Storm Spotters training class on Saturday, October 1st, at the Broward Emergency Operations Center (EOC), 201 NW 84
th Ave., Plantation, from 10 AM to 2:30 PM. Storm spotters play an integral role of alerting the National Weather Service and the public, to real-time severe weather. Sign up during the month of September by emailing Robin Terrell, SKYWARN Coordinator.
