BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County's Port Everglades will release the results of a baseline air emissions inventory on Wednesday, February 1, at 10 AM in Room 301 of the Port Administration Building, 1850 Eller Dr., Fort Lauderdale.
Port Everglades does not have air quality issues. However, as part of the Port's ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, an independent study was commissioned in 2016 to create a baseline air emissions inventory from maritime-related mobile diesel equipment operating within the Port's jurisdictional boundary during 2015.
The Port-funded activity-based inventory, developed by Starcrest Consulting Group, LLC, in cooperation with local, state and federal agencies, identified and quantified pollutants such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Examples of the equipment inventoried include cruise and cargo vessels, cargo handling equipment such as cranes and forklifts, rail operations and on-road vehicles.
Port Everglades will use the 2015 inventory results as a benchmark. The Port and its stakeholders will use the quantifiable data as a starting point to develop a long-term strategic clean air plan to maintain excellent air quality at the Port and in the surrounding areas. The air emission inventory was a required element of a partnership agreement developed jointly by Port Everglades with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Office of Transportation and Air Quality. Port Everglades is the first U.S. port to partner with the EPA in this type of landmark air emissions inventory.
This partnership will serve as a platform for the EPA to support and sustain recommendations for port environmental development using real data and real lessons learned. Practical examples will be shared with other ports, related agencies and stakeholders.
The meeting is open to Port users, tenants and the general public. All attendees will receive a copy of the report. Those interested are asked to RSVP to eneugaard@broward.org. Reservations are not required. Attendees will need a government-issued photo identification to enter the Port.
