BROWARD COUNTY, FL – The Cultural Division is honored to receive a grant of $35,000 in support of projects for the Division’s Creative Investment Program and Community Arts Education Partnership program. The grant was made possible by the following Funds at the Community Foundation of Broward: Fonda and H. Wayne Huizenga, Jr., Family Trust Fund, Gary J. Scotto Fund, and Mary and Alex Mackenzie Community Impact Fund.
Through this grant, dynamic and engaging art forms, including performances, spoken word, hip-hop, filmmaking, theater, interactive arts, printmaking, and culinary and visual art exhibits will be enhanced to strengthen their cultural impact on the community. Recipients include:
- What’s Your Elephant? hosted by multi-disciplinary artist and activist Nichole “Niki” Lopez is a project that provokes awareness and discussion through unveiling topics that are often ignored or difficult to discuss (the elephant in the room) on Saturday, August 18th. Through a series of visual and performing arts workshops and exhibits, this project seeks to demonstrate how the creative arts can assist in self-healing, providing awareness and strengthening communities. - Small Press Fair, organized by Ingrid Schindall of IS Projects and Sarah Michelle Rupert of Girls’ Club, is an opportunity for the regional print-making, book-making and zine-making community to share ideas and showcase new work on November 10th. For more information visit spf-ftl.com.
- Fågelbo (The Nest) produced by choreographer and performing artist Jenny Larsson in collaboration with Wildbeast Collective is a dance concept that pairs artists from diverse disciplines to create experimental works of art through dance. - Flagler Village Art Walk is produced by event producer and musician Joshua Tiktin. This project offers attendees a pop-up artisans market, variety of food trucks, and entertainment such as live art, live music, poets, comedians, dancers, DJs, interactive activities and more. - The Happening: A Theatrical Mixtape, Volume II produced by literary and performing artist Darius V. Daughtry is a riveting, multi-disciplinary production featuring drama, dance, poetry and music. This weekend, Saturday, July 28th, Daughtry will host his production of traditional theatrical formats with modern performance elements such as spoken word and hip-hop. - Caribbean Culinary Museum and Culinary Theater presented by Island Syndicate and led by producer and director Calibe Thompson as part of the annual Taste the Islands Experience event, brought flavors of the Islands to the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society on June 3rd during the first weekend of Caribbean American Heritage Month. The Culinary Museum displayed artifacts that allowed visitors to learn about the history of foods and cookware from different island cultures. The Culinary Theater shared a dramatic history of how food played a part in the cultural evolution of various islands and allowed visitors to sample these foods. - 48 Hour Film Project hosted by filmmaker and producer Cathleen Dean engaged emerging local film artists by creating their own short films; the finalists’ films were shown during screenings at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale June 2nd – 30th with participation by almost 700 filmmakers and filmgoers.
