- Nature center's gallery show pays tribute to Larry Joe Miller -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL – The exhibit hall at Anne Kolb Nature Center (750 Sheridan St., Hollywood 33019; 954-357-5161) continues its long tradition of showcasing local and regional artists through free monthly Gallery Exhibits, featuring work that is often inspired by nature in South Florida and elsewhere. For June, the show will be “Larry Joe Miller: Notebooks and Nature.”

The show will be up from Sunday, June 2nd through Friday, June 28th. Hours are 9AM to 5PM daily. A Reception will be held from 5 to 7PM on Saturday, June 8th.

Miller, who died in November 2017 at the age of 74, was a fixture in the cultural life of Broward County for more than three decades. He was born in Flint, Michigan, then grew up in a well-traveled military family that lived in England, Puerto Rico, and Texas; he eventually served in the Air Force himself. He came to South Florida in 1976 and settled in Hollywood, which later made him the city’s first artist-in-residence. As a teacher, he worked with both kids and adults from his studio and gallery at the Hollywood ArtsPark in Young Circle, and he was active in the Hollywood Art Guild and the Broward Art Guild, serving as president of both. Along with art, he loved music and was known locally as Mr. Rockabilly for his work as front man of the Rockabilly Rockets; he sang and played guitar, ukulele, and upright bass.

Anne Kolb was a favored spot for Miller, who spent hours sketching and painting the mangroves from the trails and the observation tower. His work, both as a solo artist and as a member of the Hollywood Art Guild, has been featured in many shows at the nature center. He considered himself a neo-Impressionist and was rarely without a notebook to capture whatever he ran across. This show will feature paintings and sketches from his notebooks, the latter having never been displayed in a public exhibit.
