Broward Declares Local State of Emergency and Other Updates

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County has declared a local state of emergency for Broward County effective today August 30th, in response to the approach of Hurricane Dorian. A local state of emergency allows Broward County officials to suspend normal government operations and order protective actions that may be necessary to ensure the health, welfare and safety of residents.

Officials urge residents to Stay Informed and Be Prepared. Check with Broward.org/Hurricane for the latest updates. The official Twitter site for Broward County information is @ReadyBroward and Facebook is  @BrowardEMD. You can also call Broward County’s Emergency Hotline at 311 or 954-831-4000.

Other updates:

  • Animal Care and Adoption will be closed Saturday, August 31st to transport animals to other locations, allow staff to prepare for the storm and prepare to receive donated supplies for anticipated recovery activities. After Saturday, the shelter will be closed until further notice but available for priority cases.
  • Businesses should take important steps before the storm to protect themselves and their employees including filling fuel tanks of company vehicles, taking pictures of your business/plant to aide in insurance or tax credit claims after the storm and communicating your hurricane policy with your employees. 
  • To report price gouging, call the Consumer Affairs Price Gouging Hotline at 866-9-No-Scam (866-966-7226) or visit myfloridalegal.com.

Closures:

  • All Broward County campgrounds, rental halls, and water parks will be CLOSED to the public starting Saturday, August 31st. For persons with reservations, please call the respective park office to reschedule your plans. Facility updates will be posted on Broward.org/Parks as necessary throughout the coming days. 
  • At Broward's Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, parking is only available for ticketed passengers. Officials suggest that passengers be dropped off at the airport or choose off-site parking.
