FLL to Relaunch North Runway on October 1

- Newly-built runway to reopen after four-month closure -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - The Broward County Aviation Department will host a "relaunch" event for the North Runway (10L-28R) at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) on Tuesday, October 1, 2019, at 9AM. After a four-month closure for significant rehabilitation, FLL is resuming aircraft operations on the newly-rebuilt and enhanced 10L-28R. The estimated $95 million reconstruction project began with preliminary taxiway work in late March followed by the airfield's closure on June 3 for its major makeover.

Reporters and photojournalists are invited to join Broward County leaders and airport stakeholders for a brief opening ceremony. Part of the runway project includes a public art component that Broward officials will reveal during the opening ceremony. The Broward Cultural Division worked in partnership with the Aviation Department to create "In-Flight," which embodies the artist's vision of nature and flight. The beautiful mural now decorates the jet blast deflector at the west approach end of the runway. The deflector protects the public and airport employees from the exhaust blast as jets prepare to takeoff.

Please note, members of the media who are planning to cover the event on Tuesday, October 1, must respond with their name and date of birth by Noon  Monday, September 30. We will meet at the Aviation Department's Office at 2200 S.W. 45th St., Dania Beach, FL 33312 at 8:15AM sharp. From the Aviation Department, we will carpool in Broward County vehicles under escort to the event site adjacent to the North Runway. As we are accessing a secure area of the airport, we will need this extra time for screening by law enforcement. If there is an emergency and a news crew needs to leave early, a Public Information Office team member will drive them back to their vehicles.
