Vaccination Efforts Ramp Up in Broward Black Communities

-Commissioner Dr. Barbara Sharief joins efforts to encourage vaccinations-

BROWARD COUNTY, FL- Commissioner Dr. Barbara Sharief is joining a number of local Black-Owned businesses who are donating gasoline generators in order to encourage Black residents to get vaccinated.

The “We Can Do This” and “Made to Save” campaigns asked Commissioner Dr. Barbara Sharief to assist in alerting Broward communities about the need to improve the percentage of Black residents in South Florida in getting vaccinated to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

The goal is to save lives and help residents prepare for hurricane season which began on June 1st and extends through November.  Commissioner Dr. Sharief and numerous Black business owners donated gasoline generators for a raffle as one incentive to increase the minority vaccination rates.

“As a Broward County Commissioner, representing District 8, I have a district that has a large population of unvaccinated residents, and I will do all that I can to help improve this percentage. We have to be creative and incentives do help.  I encourage all business owners to join forces to assist in this effort,” said Dr. Sharief.  Commissioner Dr. Sharief holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree and has participated in numerous campaigns to encourage vaccinations in Broward County Black communities.  These include the “Let’s Talk About the Covid-19 Vaccine” hosted by Broward County and the Koinonia Worship Center and was a frank discussion with local Pastors and Faith-Leaders about the need for community outreach and education. The Commissioner has also promoted the “I Did It” vaccine campaign, sponsored by Broward and Miami Dade Counties and the Health Foundation of South Florida.

District 8 in Broward County includes the cities of Pembroke Pines, Miramar, Pembroke Park, West Park, and Hallandale Beach.

The CDC reports demographic characteristics, including race/ethnicity, of people receiving COVID-19 vaccinations at the national level. Among this group, nearly two thirds were White (60%), 9% were Black, 15% were Hispanic, 6% were Asian, 1% were American Indian or Alaska Native, and <1% were Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, while 8% reported multiple or other race.
