County Celebrates National Public Works Week

- Three job fairs will be held as part of next week's activities -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - National Public Works Week runs May 15-21. This year's theme, "Ready & Resilient," highlights the importance of public works professionals in the community who work hard to keep the County running. The Public Works Department is responsible for traffic light maintenance, operating and repairing bridges, upgrading infrastructure, providing water and wastewater services and more.

The Department is made up of seven divisions including Construction Management, Facilities Management, Water and Wastewater Services, Highway Bridge and Maintenance, Highway Construction and Engineering, Traffic Engineering and Solid Waste and Recycling Services. Some of the Department's accomplishments within the past year include:

  • Completion of a 10-mile underground water reuse pipeline system that turns 60 percent of treated wastewater previously discharged into the ocean, into water reused for irrigation
  • A new 3,000 square-foot, solar-powered bus terminal in Lauderhill which is the County's first net-positive facility, generating more electrical power than the facility is expected to consume
  • Structural repairs to the Andrews Avenue and Oakland Park Boulevard bridges using an innovative process that the Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division developed themselves. Most of the rehabilitation was done on the underside of the bridges to minimize traffic delays
