Broward County Parks Director Receives National Award

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Dan West, Director of Broward County Parks and Recreation, received the 2022 Presidents Award for Outstanding Service on the Legends Committee from the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA). West says, "I was surprised and honored to get this unexpected award!"

The AAPRA comprises distinguished park and recreation administrators and scholars committed to research, professional development, and the use of best practices. West, as chair of the Legends Committee, identified, through the membership and other promotions, distinguished administrators; educators; local, state, or federal elected officials; or citizens who have made outstanding contributions to the field. Selected Legends are interviewed typically by their nominator. This is the only committee keeping an oral history of leaders in the field of park and recreation administration. West was elected to the AAPRA in 2019.

West began his Broward County career in 2009 with nearly 25 years of senior executive experience in administration and management; program innovation and facilitation; and public policy formulation and implementation at the local, state, and national levels. He oversees one of Broward County's largest agencies, with more than 1,000 filled and vacant full-time, part-time, and seasonal positions, and almost 6,500 acres, with 33 regional and neighborhood parks, specialty parks, four nature centers, and 21 natural areas. West also directs the County's Logistics Operations for the Broward Emergency Response Team.

Recreation. Preservation. Education.
