County Welcomes New Animal Care Director

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - William Douglas Brightwell has a lengthy and successful career in Animal Care dating back more than two decades. Mr. Brightwell currently serves as Director of Animal Services for Pinellas County, where he has been providing leadership since 2013, first as Field Services Manager, then as Interim Director, and for the past eight years as Director. He honorably served in two branches of the United States Armed Forces (i.e., Air Force and Navy) and went on to earn both his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and his Master of Business Administration (Human Resources Management) from Auburn University. He is a Certified Animal Welfare Administrator by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and is active in animal welfare leadership through the Florida Animal Control Association, where he was on the Board of Directors from 2015 through 2022.

"After extensive conversation about community partnerships, municipal relationships, team leadership, and policy direction, I am confident we found the right match to lead our Animal Care Division into the next era," said County Administrator, Monica Cepero. "Mr. Brightwell is compassionate, experienced and will be dedicated to animal welfare in Broward County."

"I look forward to engaging with the passionate animal care community in order to enhance the services Animal Care offers with the leadership of County Administration and the support of the Broward County Board of County Commissioners."

Broward County Animal Care provides shelter for homeless pets and helps reunite owners with their lost dog or cat. Animal Care offers free pet adoptions, spay/neuter services, and a low-cost vaccine clinic. The Agency also enforces animal laws to support public safety and offers Volunteer and Foster opportunities to those interested in helping pets in need.
